World PEAS CSA!

Support the Community Gardens Greenhouse, United Teen Equality Center (UTEC), and other local farmers and non-profits while getting fresh fruits and vegetables for you and your family!

World PEAS is a non-profit cooperative that combines produce from several small farmers in and around Lowell to provide a diverse box of veggies each week, suitable for a family of four or five (small sizes also available for smaller families). Each week of the season (18 weeks with optional holiday boxes), farmers harvest their vegetables the night before or morning of delivery. They are then packed fresh along with a newsletter with recipes and delivered to convenient pickup locations in the area. By joining the World PEAS CSA, you will get superbly-fresh produce at reasonable prices while supporting your local, small, beginning, and immigrant farmers enrolled with the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project. Get information and local CSA news atwww.worldpeascsa.org

For more information and a list of pickup locations, e-mail Matthew Himmel at mhimmel@comteam.org or call 978-654-6745. If you have a suggestion for a pickup location and there is sufficient interest (around 25 shares), we would be happy to deliver there as well.

Join Chief Lavallee for the next
Downtown Lowell Sub Committee Meeting
City Hall, Mayor’s Reception Hall
375 Merrimack Street
Monday, November 16, 2009
7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

UPDATE:
Last night we had a very good meeting with Chief Lavallee, several residents and bar owners. No real surprises; crime is up and funding is down. LPD is still doing an excellent job despite having a deficit of 34 officers. On a positive note everyone in attendance agreed that face-to-face communication between residents and the bars has been great.

Chief Lavallee also told us that the crime statistics that he provides to us now at meetings will be available on-line at: http://www.crimemapping.com/

Captain Kennedy mentioned that there is an “epidemic” of car break-ins all over the city. He reminds everyone that the smallest thing left in your car will attract a thief; most of all GPS devices (but they take just about anything including change in console). Be sure to put it in the trunk or bring it inside and use a moist cloth to wipe away the marks from the device on your dash.

The fun part was when Chief Lavallee took us on a field-trip next door to the new Emergency Communications Center. The recently completed project includes the area where dispatchers work; they were able to give us quite an impressive demonstration of what happens when you call 911. The next room is designed as “central command center” during an emergency. I believe their eight agencies from the city and local area represented during a time of emergency. All-in-all I was feeling like my tax dollars where spent very well on this particular project. And let’s not forget…those dispatchers are the folks who were literally falling through the floor in their old space. I’d say this one is considerably safer for them while they are helping to keep all of us safe.

One more thing…UTEC is celebrating their 10th Anniversary Wednesday with a fundraising party. Greg Coutreau will be recognizing a member of LDNA for being one of their first partners in the neighborhood. Although the admission is pricey; it would be great if you can support this outstanding organization.
Date: Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Time: 6:00-8:00 PM
Location: 34 Hurd St. Lowell, MA 01852
Tickets are $50 in advance, $75 at the door
http://www.utec-lowell.org/

There will be no formal LDNA meeting until January 2010; I’m sure that I will be seeing all of you between now and then.

CITY COUNCIL ELECTION

Thanks to Dick Howe for posting the election results by ward/precinct; here’s some additional numbers and they show a steady growth-rate.
I do not yet have 2-1 and 2-2 for 2007.
Ward 2, Percent 3 includes most of “downtown”, Appleton to Warren, to Dutton, to Fr. Morrisette

2009 City Council Election
18.5% turn-out (439 voters)
Total number of voters for Ward 2 = 801

2007 City Council Election
17.4% turn-out (336 voters)

2005 City Council Election
15.3% turn-out (261 voters)

Home is Where the heART Is

Everyone is invited to learn more about the museum’s youth programs at this special event that includes an evening of music, food and fun. The festivities include a fashion art auction, music and live performances, along with light refreshments and a cash bar. Tours of the new facilities will be offered throughout the night.

All proceeds from the event support the museum’s community art and education programs. Tickets may be purchased over the phone at 978-937-2787, online at www.revolvingmuseum.org, or at the door.

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood…

Just saw this on SUN.com http://www.lowellsun.com/election/ci_13710620
That’s our Ted…always in the “thick-of-things”.

There’s all kinds of people lurking around the neighborhood tonight makin all kinds of noise…WTF?

Oh, maybe it has something to do with this!
City Council Election Results
Rita Mercier 6,951
Edward Caulfield 6,309
Franky Descoteaux 6,242
James Milinazzo 5,767
Kevin Broderick 5,766
William Martin 5,678
Joseph Mendonca 5,478
Patrick Murphy 4,924
Rodney Elliott 4,851
But a much more impressive number is 170; that is the increase in voter turn-out downtown compared to 2007. I’ll have more numbers later, but apparently people realized that this group of nine are the people responsible for making policy and setting the tax rate in our city and you made your opinion of who those people should be by getting out and voting. Thank you all!

LDNA Meeting

As always, big THANKS to our Treasurer/stand-in secretary/most prolific blogger member Greg Page. He has posted notes from last nights LDNA meeting on his “New Englander” blog.
There are also links to the UMASS “Arts and Ideas” newsletter which contains the schedule for the Lunchtime Seminars and The Baystate Marathon.
I’ll add that I like the idea of LDNA putting together a small group of volunteers for this event. Anyone that is interested, please let me know next week (September 9th).

If you did not happen to read the Globe this morning (which I had not until Susan Purdy sent along this article) there’s a great article about the North End Residents Council…it’s like reading LDNA minutes multiplied…
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/09/29/residents_fight_loud_late_night_bar_scene_in_north_end/
They also have a blog which resembles something like Boston.com more than what you would expect from a neighborhood asscociation. http://www.northendwaterfront.com/
